This is the latest in an occasional series of blog posts about the campaign for open address data in the UK. Previous posts are listed at the bottom.
In recent posts I have written about various requests I have made to UK local authorities to unlock their Council Tax address lists as open data.
But of course I am not the only requester with an interest in making address data more widely available to the public.
In this post, I highlight dozens of address datasets from UK local authorities published on the WhatDoTheyKnow website following a batch request submitted last year.
Recently I have been made aware of a batch request for lists of "names and numbers assigned to properties" submitted to 361 UK local authorities by William Price in February 2025, using the WhatDoTheyKnow (WDTK) website.
The request itself is somewhat convoluted, but the full scope potentially includes a complete list of property addresses for the area covered by each local authority.
In the vast majority of cases, the local authorities have refused the requests or withheld most of the requested information, and it appears that Mr Price has not followed up on any of the correspondence. In some cases the authorities have not responded at all. However, in a significant number of cases the local authority has disclosed either a full or partial list of full addresses.
As the WDTK site automatically publishes disclosures of information and the associated correspondence, those address lists are available for download by the public.
I have listed below the address datasets that I have found among the batch of responses.
Unfortunately Mr Price did not submit a re-use request – he took the mistaken position that the data "cannot be considered intellectual property since it is entirely factual" – but three of the local authorities seem to have disclosed address lists with permission for re-use as open data under the terms of the Open Government Licence: High Peak, Staffordshire Moorlands, and Tewkesbury.
